EAL Level 2 certificate in Turning Short Course (AUEC2-013)
This unit identifies the training and development required in order that the student can demonstrate that they are competent in being able to carry out turning operations on machines such as centre lathe using a range of work holding devices.
Description
What you’ll learn
The student will be expected to prepare for the turning activities by obtaining all the necessary information, documentation, tools and equipment required, and to plan how they intend to carry out the required turning activities and the sequence of operations they intend to use. students will be required to prepare for the turning activities by mounting, positioning and correctly setting a range of work holding devices, to mount the workpiece and cutting tools and to set and use cutting feeds/speeds and techniques appropriate to the type of material, tooling, workpiece rigidity and operations being performed.
Students will be expected to produce components that combine a number of different features, such as parallel, stepped and tapered diameters, drilled, bored and reamed holes, internal and external threads, and special forms/profiles.
During, and on completion of, the turning operations, Students will be expected to check the quality of the workpiece, using measuring equipment appropriate to the aspects being checked and the tolerances to be achieved. Students will need to be able to recognise turning defects, to take appropriate action to remedy any faults that occur and to ensure that the finished workpiece is within the drawing requirements. On completion of the turning activities, Students will be expected to remove all cutting tools and work holding devices, and to leave the machine and work area in a safe and tidy condition.
Who is this course for
This course is aimed at Engineers that have a base understanding of machining principles and provides a further base to up skill, or for those wanting to gain foundational practical skills, from non-machining roles needing to understand basic turning principles.
How you’ll be assessed
Assessment is done through knowledge-based questions and products of work combined with observations. The student will receive an EAL Level 2 certificate upon successful completion of the course.
Prerequisites
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, to ensure the safety of all participants and maintain the progression pace of the course, it is essential that candidates possess a baseline of "on-the-tool" experience.
This course is designed to formalise existing skills rather than teach basic manual dexterity from scratch.
