EAL Level 2 Certificate in CNC Turning (AUEC2-034) & CNC Programming (AUEC2-021) Short Course
These units combined allow the student to develop the required competencies to be able to demonstrate how to prepare, program and use CNC turning machines in a safe manner. These courses prepare students for entry into the engineering or manufacturing sectors, creating a strong progression between education and employment and can also be used as a basis for the development of additional skills and occupational competences in the working environment.
Description
What you’ll learn
CNC Turning (AUEC2-034)
In preparing the CNC turning machine for work, Students will learn and demonstrate how to safely select the appropriate work holding devices these are to be correctly mounted and safely secured to the machine spindle. Students will work on a range of work products from technical engineering drawings. Students will also be required to select the appropriate cutting tools, to mount, secure and set always ensuring machine and operator safety.
Alongside of the above students must load, Input and check component programs. Students are expected to check for errors/faults and edit and amend saving any program changes. Students will also be required to set and adjust the machine tool offsets to achieve component specification. Students will be producing components that combine several different features, such as parallel, stepped and tapered diameters, drilled, bored and reamed holes, internal and external threads, and special forms/profiles on a range of materials ensuring that all required tolerances are met.
Students will be expected to check the quality of the workpiece at the required intervals on and off the machine, using a range of measuring equipment appropriate to the aspects being checked and the tolerances to be achieved. On completion of the turning activities Students will be expected to remove appropriate cutting tools and work holding devices, and to leave the machine and work area in a clean, safe and tidy condition.
CNC Programming (AUEC2-021)
This unit allows the student to develop the required skills and competencies to expand further knowledge and skills to the Turning unit. The Student can demonstrate that they are competent in being able to: Cover a broad range of basic computer numerical control (CNC) programming competences that will prepare them for entry into the engineering or manufacturing sectors, creating a progression between education and employment, or that will provide a basis for the development of additional skills and occupational competencies in the working environment. Students will be required to produce the component program from an engineering drawing using either manual data input or by use of a remote computer.
Students will be expected to prepare part programs, using operational sequences and machining techniques that avoid unnecessary tool/cutter movements or tool changes, and to use repetitive programs and canned cycles, to reduce program size and input time. Students will prepare component programs that combine several different operations, such as parallel, stepped and tapered diameters, drilled, bored and reamed holes, internal and external threads, to name but a few. Students will be required to check all programs using single block run and program edit features. Students will also be required to adjust the machine tool equipment and program offsets, following proving/editing procedures, to achieve the correct component specification to drawing.
Who is this course for
This course is for students working or seeking work in the CNC Turning manufacturing industry and provides the core skills to be developed further.
How you’ll be assessed
Assessment is done through knowledge-based questions and products of work combined with observations. The learner will receive an EAL Level 2 certificate upon completion of the course.
Prerequisites
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, Students should have a base understanding of the turning principles and a basic understanding of engineering drawings and measuring equipment.
